Large Tuareg Hide shield Ayar of white Oryx Hide. The shape typical with the edge rolled and painted in black. Traditional protective incised designs to the front and top adorned with two circular metal bosses. The reverse with a long leather covered handle. These shields were used only by the noble class of warrior in Touareg society, Ihaggaren. In themselves they are unusually large for shields from the Sahel and Sub-Saharan regions, and denote the particularly warlike nature of the Touareg people.
