A scarce woven Cane small shield or buckler from Aceh in Northern Sumatra. Due to the fragile nature of the material these shields do not survive very often. This example is mounted with brass stars, retaining fragments of fabric beneath showing that originally the cane would not have been visible but the entire surface underneath the metal mounts would have been covered. The outer 2 or 3 bands of the cane are very fragile on this example and have some wire to keep the structure intact as some of the overbinding has been lost. southern asia
