A very nice example of the Beja Tribe Shield from Sudan/Eritrea. These shields were made in a variety of hides from different animals, this one being made from Elephant is perhaps rare than most forms. Beautiful rich patina from age, the circular circumference broken by two circular cutouts at opposite sides, the large conical boss with a raised ridge across it. The reverse shows a simple handle, crafted from the same hide with ingenious use of knotting and wrapping, lots of use wear to the grip. Superb condition with no damage, 19th century. 19 inches in diameter.
