Antique Persian shamshir with wootz steel blade

Description

An old antique Persian shamshir sword’. Dating to the late 18th/early 19th century period, the hilt features an earlier style crossguard with long elongated quillons with nicely shaped bud finials at the end. Gold damascened decoration in two colours of gold remains although rubbed and age worn. The grips are of walrus ivory, typical for higher quality pieces, the other steel furniture was originally gilt as well. The blade of good curving steel, showing fine wootz damascus patterning to areas, some areas of pitting at the blade end. The scabbard recovered with black hide, two steel hanging mounts for a strap with the same gold decoration remaining ensuite to the hilt, age worn again. 38 inches long overall in scabbard
