A large and impressive Syrian Shamshir sword, probably from Turkey or Syria, dating the the 19th century. The large heavy blade is very impressive and much earlier, of Hungarian or eastern european type, etched with designs on both sides including a sun and moon.The hilt with heavily decorated mounts, horn grips inlaid with stars and adornments. Steel crossguard, and silver pommel with a brass chain between the two. The scabbard has been recovered with black leather, the original mounts are stunning with bright geometric designs in silver on a blackened steel background, very striking. In addition this sword retains its original long hanging sash with tassels, damage to one. A most impressive collectors piece dating to the 19th century
