A nice antique Patani Kris from Thailand, the hilt formed strikingly as a ‘kingfisher’ – ‘pekaka’, decorated with elaborate carved designs. The long upcurving nose and the base of the figure sheathed with silver. The waved kris blade is beautifully carved with fretwork to the upper parts, a ridge descends down the centre of the blade. The scabbard is original, the kris doesn’t seem to fully fit into the upper part but sits proud, and there are some chips to the sheath extremeties. A rare form of kris to find complete. 19th century. southern asia
