A rare shield of the Latuko tribe. Massive and highly decorative, the shield designed to cover the full body length and allow for vision from between the slit upper-section. The white hide rigid and strengthened along the reverse with a stick bound with hide strips, loops for hanging. The front and bottom reverse applied with large decorative balls of black ostrich feather. Dating to the mid 20th century, possibly earlier. The Latuko as a group bear many similarities with other neighbouring tribes such as the Dinka and Nuer, but their shields in particular retain highly individual forms. Approx 5 ft. $2500 |
