An old shield of the Bogabo people from the Southern Philippines. Attractive complete and fully original piece. Light wood carved with a central boss and handle to the reverse, strengthened at intervals with binding, top section of a seperate piece of wood shaped and bound. Retaining its original painted surface of black designs apon a red background. The edges inlaid with tufts of hair retained by thin plugs of wood. These shields have also been found in North Borneo where it is assumed they must have been brought by Bogabo or Moro settlers or raiders. 38 x 15 inches approximately.
