An old Maori paddle for a war-canoe 'hoe'. The wood with smooth worn patination allover, the shaft shaped to allow ease of use. Small circular finial to the top of handle, one side retaining a deeply carved design, the other has lost its carving. A small carved motif of the flat of the blade may indicate the owner/maker. A very attractive old piece. New Zealand, 19th Century.
