A shield from the hill-tribes of Laos or Vietnam. Circular shape constructed of wood and cane, the front and back applied with designs cut from strips of tin. The front with the large sunburst design seen on examples in the Barbier-Mueller Colleciton and the Musee de l'Homme, Paris. The convex reverse with cane/wood grips. The front of the shield is dished. The exact purpose and origin of these shields appears to be unclear, and it is possible that as well as for warfare they were used for ceremonies. Early 20th century. Apprix 18.5 inches diameter.
