A rare early Siamese shield 'Dhung'. Rectangular shaped shield of moulded buffalo hide coloured red and with designs in gold leaf applied to the front. Eight circular rivets attaching wooden strengthener and handle to the reverse. Good condition, some losses to edges, wear to gilding. There are visible elements of another design in gold leaf beneath the decoration. These shields survive only rarely due to the relative fragility of their construction. A Siamese war hat constructed and decorated in a similar manner is illustrated in W.O.Oldmans catalogue number 36 which is described as belonging to the King of Siams personal bodyguard circa 1700. Approximately 30 x 12 inches. Thailand, 18th century or earlier. $sold
