An interesting old rifle from the Southern Caucasus. The wooden stock of highly striped wood, the foresection up to the lock covered with black hide or leather in the Russian fashion. The butt with a large section of walrus ivory and inlaid ivory stringing. The lock of miquelet/flintlock type and remaining fully functioning. As was often the case with better quality rifles from this area Turkish barrels were highly prized. This example has a finely watered damascus barrel, the forte and end inlaid with scrolling gold, two small gold inlaid inscriptions one with the early date 1715, two deep cartouches to the forte with arabic calligraphy. The cappucines are unusual in being of silver and each one stamped with the Turkish tughra. Good condition, all parts original, a fine firearm, probably from Daghestan. 17th/18th century.
