A rare dagger of the Mandaya tribe from Eastern Mindanao. Beautifully shaped wooden hilt with forked arms and a steel projecting 'tongue' decorated with silver. Characteristically shaped blade of good steel of sturdy diamond section. The sheath mounted with silver bands to the front alternately pierced and punched with designs, the central one with a loop for a fabric strap. The reverse with an applied bark section, banded with black rattan and tied with fine fibre cord. Good overall condition. Approx 14 inches long. 19th century, Southen Philippines.
