A good quality and heavy pair of Chinese swords 'shuang jian'. Well made straight double-edged steel blades of flattened diamond section, with triangular pointed tips. The hilts flattened on the inner faces to sit together in one scabbard, swollen fluted wooden grips. The scabbard of wood covered with yellow/brown turtleshell, finely mounted with brass fittings, possibly gilt, with designs of bats and various chinese symbolic motifs. Very good condition, some old loss to turtleshell at scabbard end. Approximately 26 inches overall length. 19th century.
