A very interesting European Officers scimitar in the Hussar or Mameluke style. Of Damascus steel the blade exhibiting strong linear watering and whorls, the sides of both blades etched with stars, moons, trophies of arms and Islamic style calligraphy. The hilt of a solid piece of ivory of good colour, knuckle chain of silver links. The steel scabbard with hanging rings and with an unusual protective chape feature. The forte showing gold inlaid writing showing the blade was made in the famous workshop at Liege noted for its high quality Damascus gun-barrels and sabre blades, 'N.Hanquet Aine a Liege. Presumably a custom made piece for a high ranking Officer. Early 19th century.
