A very attractive shamshir sword from Arabia or Oman. Very high quality gently curving heavy steel blade, single-edged with an unusual multiple fuller arrangement which as well as looking attracive gives great rigidity to the piece. The hilt fitted with two lovely pieces of ivory with some 'burr' type patterning to one side, the mounts of intricately chiselled silver, the lower grip bound with woven twisted silver wire. A steel crosspiece with out-stretched quilon guards and rounded finials. The scabbard is covered with a velvet type fabric, fitted with two steel hanging mounts chiselled in the Persian style with birds within panels, the long chape is of silver, again finely chiselled and worked with designs. All in very good condition, the blade and crosspiece have a dark unpolished patina and are likely to be of watered steel. The silver chape has minor wear and damage to the very tip. 38 inches overall length. A high quality sword dating to the 19th century or earlier.
