An unusual and high quality heavy 'song-kiem' or double-sword from Indo-China/Vietnam. This type of sword is closely related in form to the Chinese straight sword 'Jian', and whereas forms of jian double sword are not uncommon, Vietnamese versions appear to be much rarer. This example has silver chiselled mounts, the lower guard, and those of the scabbard decorated with dragons, the pommel of more chinese form with a central symbol, two small lugs for tassel attachment. Large swollen black horn grips. Very fine and well made steel blade, having one flat side, the other with a stout raised median ridge and two shallow fullers. The swords are very sturdy yet light, perfectly designed for fighting. The scabbard has three silver mounts, and the body is covered with unusually thick turtle shell. 30 inches overall, the blades 22.5 inches. Dating to the 18th or 19th century. $reserved
