An unusual and rare form of Chinese sword 'Dao'. The blade featuring an extraordinary shaped tip with a curled and hook design leading to a waved back edge. The steel blade is of good quality with visible laminations and a darkened hardened edge, which has seen some fairly vigorous use and has chipping. A small inlaid brass plug to the forte. The hilt of good quality manufacture, heavy brass mounts with a facetted diamond design, the gip of a single piece of swollen rib-carved horn. Small reduced guard of brass, Similar styles of blade can be seen in early Chinese painting and sculpture dating to the Ming and earlier, the mountings of this example suggest it is more likely to be 18th or 19th century in date. A very interesting piece. Age wear, 25.5 inches long overall.
