A good Kenyah Dayak sword 'Mandau' or in Malay 'parang ihlang'. The traditional sword of the dyak tribes. This is a high quality example, the hilt of carved staghorn with the grip bound with cane. A heavy steel blade beautifully made with a facetted convex outer side and concave inner. Inlaid with silver and brass motifs.The scabbard made of striped wood, carved and bound with cane, the top retaining its bone collar, the reverse with hide sidesheath and adorned with coloured cut hair and a tooth/horn. The carrying strap strong and very intricately made of interwoven cane with a series of beadwork tassles and a carved tooth of staghorn as a buckle. A very high quality piece dating to the early 20th century.
