A good Moro sword or chopper 'Barong'. Quality steel blade with leaf shaped blade and single curved edge, the back thickened to give great rigidity and strength. The hilt with a carved pommel of ivory with long elegant 'cockatoo' crest to the pommel. The upper grip intricately bound with cord, the lower fitted with a silver ferrule, the lower mount being of suassa (gold/silver/copper) alloy. Barongs of this quality with precious materials such as ivory and suassa were generally reserved for nobility at this time. Sulu, second half of the 19th century.
