An interesting sword 'dha' from Laos or Vietnam. A two-handed example having a 10.5 inch long steel and copper mounted hilt. The circular steel guard with a raised lip around the edge on both sides, with a steel collar extending upwards to the grip. Very good quality steel blade with visible lamellar marks showing a hardened tip, the forte inlaid with a brass collar, and layered brass fittings to resemble that of a Japanese-style sword. The simple wooden scabbard lacquered in black (minor damage). Swords in the Japanese style or taste appear to have been in vogue during particular periods in this region of South East Asia. This example handles very fast, is very light and well-balanced and functions as a pure fighting weapon, being typically austere in its styling. 19th century or earlier. 40 inches.
