A rare early Deccani fighting sword. The hilt of characteristic shape with a large shaped pommel with a ball finial, swollen handgrip, and large dished handguard. The blade with a thick reinforcing rib for its length and reinforced tip. The hilt with chiselling and with some of its original gilt-silver leaf remaining. Frequently referred to as 'Madrassi' swords and in early references labelled a form of Malabar sword. A truly sculptural work of art. These swords are rarely seen outside museum collections and seldom retain any trace of the original silver. 36 inches long overall. Deccan/Southern India, 16th century.
