An interesting Swedish or Russian Officers Cavalry sword. The hilt of heavy gilt-brass or bronze with a front and side handguard, decorated in high relief with four crowns, three small and one large. The grip retaining its original ribbed fishskin covering. The blade single edged and slightly curving with a deep fuller near the spine. Engraved at the forte on one side 'TULA', and the other '1789'. The Tula arms factory at Moscow was founded by Peter the Great in 1712 and became famous particularly in the second half of the 18th and early 19th centuries for the quality of its blade production. Age wear overall, and minor wear to the gilding, the blade with multiple nicks to the edge and having been semi-blunted in the past.
