A rare excavated Anglo-Saxon shield boss. Early form of domed shape and protruding 'nipple' finial, flattened brim with holes for affixing to shield. This boss would have formed the hand guard placed centrally in a circular shield made of wood or/and leather. Warriors holding shields with near identical bosses can be seen in contemporary manuscripts depicting the court of King Alfred. Excellent excavated condition, this boss has not been cleaned and still retains some soil etc. Excavated from a warriors grave near Sohum, Cambridgeshire along with a spearhead, belt buckle and other personal artifacts. Anglo-Saxon, 7th/8th century.
