Viking Axehead

An early English Battle-Axe head. Heavy gracefully shaped iron head with forward leaning cutting edge and long thin waisted blade. Square section haft mounting with protruding lugs for additional strength. The date of this axehead is uncertain although the included picture at bottom shows a Viking battle-axe head recovered from the River Thames in the British Museum. This axe is clearly Scandinavian influenced from the silver inlay design and bears a strikingly similar profile and shape to the axe offered here. Early axeheads of this date are very rare. Very good excavated condition. Length of axe-head 7 inches, length of cutting edge 4 inches. 10th/11th century, Southern England.
